Poetry at the Docks
This talk assembles an archive of modernist and proletarian poetry written in seaports from Lisbon to San Francisco in the era when these cities reorganized their harbors around the convulsive steam-age processes of maritime globalization. Focusing on poetic fascinations with the docks as points of transition, embarkation, and obstruction in the worlds of commodity circulation, automation, and deskilling, the talk proposes a revisionist account of the structure of modern world literature.
Harris Feinsod is Ralph S. and Becky G. O'Connor Associate Professor of English and Director of the Tidewater Initiative at Johns Hopkins University.
